A bit of history

musee_024_bisBorn in 1814 in the Vosges, François-Louis Français’s parents wanted him to become a key-maker despite his obvious talent for drawing.  He escaped to Paris when he was 15 and trained there in the atelier of Jean Gigoux.  François-Louis Français went on to  become  a well-known artist and founder of the famous « Ecole de Barbizon ». Today, his paintings can be found in the musée d’Orsay and the Louvre.

He built a magnificent atelier in 1875,  located 139 boulevard du Montparnasse in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. After his death in 1897, the building changed hands several times before being puchased by Ecole Pratique de Service Social in 1922. Despite a few changes in the 1950’s and the construction of a small wing,  the inner volumes and organization remain the same.

Imagine having a class in the very same room where François-Louis Français created his masterpieces!
